Game Design 101 - Prototype Art & Illustrations

When developing your prototype, you’ll need an assortment of art, illustrations, and icons. There are many websites where you can access a variety of art and icons at no cost. These websites are fantastic resources to pull assets from to give your projects some color and character. Playing around with art can give you an idea of how information is best presented on your components and how you’d like your final projects to look in terms of layout and graphic design.

While you may replace most of your prototype art and graphic design with work from a professional down the road, many of these websites will provide art that is part of the public domain - meaning it can be used commercially for products. In other words, you can use and manipulate art provided by some of these websites for the components of your game, providing a low-cost option for illustrations. Some websites will provide art with certain restrictions (such as providing attribution to the artist) or for a small fee. Always check the details of the license on the website!
